ok ive searched on this topic but still dont understand. if i run a sump with the suction part being gravity fed how do i match thr gph on the pump for the return. i figure if i dont have enough the sump will over flow and if i have to much the pump will gurgle and i dont want the extra noise. how do i do this cause its bothering me.:irked: please explain this to me in dummy terms!!:nilly:

Just a quick search and I came up with this site, looks like it explains it alright (mainly just look at the pics of the overflow), basically you don't just have a siphon tube straight from the tank to the sump (other wise it would over flow like you said). So you have the two boxes around the siphon tube to prevent it from pulling more water then your sump can return to the tank, and as long as your pump is not stronger than your overflow, no gurgle should happen. That help? :)

This gives you the overflow aspects http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101156

Then you just have to remember that an overflow is not a syphon, it's an overflow, and it should all become clear.;)
