knowing nothing about sumps, i've seen a few 2nd hand tanks around that have them, one in particular a 280g, is just a sump enough to run a tank of this size? I think it only holds 80 L or so. Even if another filter had to be purchased would i be correct onh thinking i could get away with maybe a fluval fx5 as the sump has plenty of bio filtration???

I run a few tanks on sump only and they're my favorite:)

I would say a 80 litre sump is slightly insufficient, in terms of volume, but not impossible.

It all boils down to how you have the sump designed and functioning... there are a couple of threads around here that detail the scheme of sumps..please look into them.:)

sump only for me but I did add a canister to my sump for chemipure only till I redo my sump and change it arround

:iagree: , but also depends on the bio-load.

I only run sumps (on my reefs, FO, and FOWLR) and I love them. They can be the most effective form of life support when built right. Pack a ton of bio-balls on one end making sure to keep them out of the water, put a drip tray over them. Use Micron filter socks for solid waste. Or run a pump loop on your sump and go with a reverse flow sand bed. This is by far the best way to biologically filter your tank. Also with sumps it is very simple to add equiptment like nitrate reductors, etc..
For a 280g I would run a 55g sump. This provides room for additions. If you need diagrams or anything I would be more than happy to help.
