Sump questions

A sump will not clear the water in and of itself, it is just an extra space to put stuff like pumps, heaters or extra filter media. Filter socks in a sump are great water clarifiers. They must be rinsed out regularly.
And as stated above the DE filter is fabulous.
 
Yeah I have been looking into those de filters but I also put some 100 micron filter pad in my canister and it has cleared up some. I have the vortex Xl on its way here but I read on here about a DIY canister made out of PVC pipe and I have been working on that just as a experiment. I want to make on for a inline filter but I am afraid it will slow the flow rate to much. So right now I plan on using my pond pump to pump the water back up to the tank from the DIY canister. It is made out of 3" PVC pipe with 2 caps tapped with 1/2 tubing thread inserts. And it has 100 micron filter floss then my ceramics and more filter floss and the a final layer of 100 micron. Hopefully this isn't a complete bust but if it is Ohh well you live and you learn right.
