So a few months a go I bought my 4x2x2 second hand, it came with a sump and return pump already setup. Now recently I've been thinking that, because the return line has a lot of right angles, it might not be as efficient as it could be. Here's a photo to clarify things

So would making it a more direct path with less corners help efficiency? Thanks :D

Yes it will. The 90 degree angles will cause the water to slow down more than say one continuous hose will. In effect, that setup is running a lower GPH than what you could be running.
just my 2 cents

Yes bend will restrict flow. Get a long flexible one.

Kinda interesting how they suspended the pump, must have been to reduce noise/vibration.. You could also drill the sump and add bulkhead to get a straight shot out of the side of the sump and not go over the top and then run one piece of hose straight from the pump to the tank. I agree with the others, re-plumb with one hose or pvc and lose all the 90's.. Plus it looks like the hose is smaller than the input and output, so increasing the size of the new hoses would help too.

Thanks guys that's pretty much what I thought.
And I agree, it is a bit strange, I would have done it differently but that's how it was when I got it. Think I'm gonna play around with it this weekend.
Not sure if the pump is submersible, I believe it's an eheim 1260, but not sure, the label is mostly worn off....

Oh and yes, I believe it was set up to reduce noise, the inside of the cabinet doors are also sound proofed, his wife apparently hated the sound of running water.

How does this look? I'm getting a much higher flow rate, the only downside is it takes a lot longer to start up.

Agree if that pump is submersible, go for it!
Reduce tons of piping.
