I agree. I had a 35Gallon rubber maid on a 220 and had to add another 55 gallon ruber maid, so that my pump 3300GPH wouldn't suck air. I also used both a check valve and a siphon break. The check valve was there to allow less water to return to the sump, so I can run it higher. The siphon break was the O shoot save my butt backup.
However since switching to a much lower powered pump I am able to now use a single 55gallon tank as the sump with no problems. However the lower powered pump can't run my UGJ, I truelly miss them, my fish loved them, and circulation and waste management was awesome.
I disagree the you should have the intakes on the bottom, if you have a good UGJ all waste will rise to the top. If you have the intakes on the bottom you have to worry about substrate getting sucked up.
