Exactly what I would say. Ceramic rings will not offset the wet/dry, they will just add to it. The reason rock is so good as a filter is because it has anaerobic areas inside that water slowly gets to. The bacteria within the rock break down nitrates unlike any other media which cannot offer this benefit.
