Sump size

Any bacteria based bio filter is going to reduce the nitrogen compounds to nitrates. A drip water change system is a great way to rid your tank of the nitrates.

The part of my trickle filter I am most impressed with is the water oxygenation. My 110gal is way over filtered but I added a trickle filter because I picked it up for only $30. I saw no change in water tests (Nitrogen products read almost zero before the trickle filter addition). Man did I notice an increase in my Cichlids activity though. They were always active but now they seem much more so. I credit this to better water oxygenation... weather I am correct or not is another topic.

I can't see how having too big of a sump would hurt anything!

Thanks Oughtsix, I have been carrying out 50% water changes twice a week to keep the Nitrates down, I'd like to make it as maintance free as possible.

PSHtex, would ten inch of frame/tank and twelve inch of timber main tank floor be enough clearance to carry out sump maintanance?

I am trying to line my main tank up with the top of the brick fireplace arch.

This is the design I have saw far.

3" Box section
1" Timber sump floor
3" Box Section
1" Timber tank floor.
28" Sump
24" Main tank

Leaves 10" clearance to access sump.
Could possibly raise by another 2" at a must.

I think 3 inch clearance would be doable but it will be a huge PITA to chang anything in your sump. espesially if/when you have to take biomedia out. Also if you use socks your gonna have to change those frequently so you want to make sure they are in a place that's easy to reach to make maintaining your tank easier.
