I've got my new (used) 220g tank (72x30x24), and I'm going to build a sump for it. I'm just wondering which size is sufficient for this size tank. I am trying to pick between two sizes:

36Lx18Wx18T = 50g
48Lx18Wx18T = 67g

I like the first one, because it only takes up about half the space under the stand. The second one takes up two thirds of the space.

I haven't fully decided on amount of biomedia yet, but I'm aiming for around 10g of biomedia whichever size sump I use.

My question is, would the 50g sump be large enough to handle the drainage from a 220g tank? Or would I need to go with the 67g tank for the extra holding capacity?

I'll try to get some drawings of my sump designs up later today.

I am using a 40G breeder on a 210G tank. I also like the extra space under the cabinet.

I divided up a little more than half of this sump for a fuge. The other half is my biochamber and pump well. Perfect water parameters with over 14' of large haps and mature mbuna. I feed lightly twice a day.

The fuge has finally kicked in. I got very close to zero nitrAte creep this week and did not do a WC.

That 50G should serve you well on your setup.

What plants are you using in your fuge?

I agree, the 50 should be fine. Plus you have room under there to add another filter if you want.

I'm also curious about the plants.

Here's my newest sump design (I've done about a dozen over the last week :nilly:).

I really like this one, especially incorporating the plant fuge. This design will give me about 11.2g of biomedia.

I will also have a 350gph canister filter running on this tank once its set up, so the sump won't be the only filter.

I forgot to mention, the two orange blocks will be AC 110 foam blocks, so that as the water leaves the biochamber and enters the fuge, it will be filtered through those as well.

Still don't know what kind of plants to put in the fuge though.

The layered media above the biochamber will be:

1. Coarse filter pad (pink)
2. Coarse-medium filter pad (medium red)
3. Medium-fine filter pad (red)
4. 100 or 200 micron filter pad (white)

oh i envy you those are the fotrint atern i want on a 220.got any pics of the new to you tank yet

Yah, I got lucky finding one with the 30" width rather than 24". Much nicer dimensions imo.

There are some bad pictures of it in this thread. It was shoved in a guys garage and completely surrounded by other junk. It appears to be in pretty good condition, considering its an acrylic tank and was used for saltwater. Other than some calcification that I need to clean off, the scratches don't seem that bad. We'll see once get it clean, but it should need minimal buffing to look brand new.

I also like that the overflow is at one end of the tank, as its designed to be a room divider tank. I won't be able to set it up like that in my house now, but maybe in the future it could be used like that.
