I am looking for a diagram of a sump system so I can see how it actually works, and reccommendations or a link on how to build my own. It obviously is the way to go but seems very complicated. I am hopeless on the computer and any help would be great.

This is the overflow explanation, which is the most complicated part of the sump in my opinion. Once you have this figured out all you have to do is decide how you want to set up your sump, which really isn't that difficult.
Dont get frustrated if you dont understand it all immediatly, It took me a while to understand exactly how it worked. I havn't made one yet, but I really like the concept of it as well

Here is a siplme drawing of a sump design I threw together last week. The water enters on the left through an overflow, goes through a prefilter, in this case it will then pass through a refugium, then onto a drip plate and down through some filter media and then it get pumped back into the tank.
