sump vs. Fx5

What are the differences between a 55 gallon sump and an fx5? Such as costs effectiveness ect.
 
A 55 Gallon sump will beat a Single Fx5 hands down any day.
 
55G sump would be way cheaper to build
 
how much total cost to build a 55 gallon sump and where would i get all the pieces?
 
craigslist or ebay for the tank/pump, then the dollar store for the bio media, then you have to wait to see if the tank is glass or acrylic to get the rest of the pieces :P
 
A rubbermaid = the sump.

The overflow = either buy one (~$100), DIY PVC, or a plastic kool aid pitcher (with a handle) and some tubing

The media baskets = a 3 drawer rubbermaid container with holes in each layer

The media = scrubbies, army men, bio balls, whaterver

You need to buy a pump.
 
sump will be better than a FX5 especially if you using sand. Overall, sump is easier to clean and maintain..
