This is one of the reason I wanted to do it, cause I really like the way this looks. I already have 8 tanks that are setup with stands, canopy, sump under the stand, etc..I think your very last comment of "might still get a stand" is the way to go really. A large well maintained aquarium is a thing of beauty, a real focal point in a room. But dumping it on the floor? It's like having your tele on the floor instead of on a stand or wall mounted. You just shouldn't do it imo.
This one looks nice and the layout is very similar to where I want to put the tank. Where as if I set it up traditionally, I will have to standup to enjoy it, but I understand what you are saying.
