some body give me as much info as possible about sumps. anybody have alternative besides sump? for 200+ gallons

200 gal, i would do a sump. 55 gal sump would be just perfect with an FX5 to supplement it. they are pretty easy to build, IME, mine goes filter sock - ceramic media (eggcrate) bio balls (eggcrate) heaters and pump. but if your not into the whole building the sump part, two fx5's would be alright depending on the stock of the tank.

They work great. Is there anything specific you want to know? That's a very broad request.

I don't mean this in a rude way. Everything you need to know is already on this website. Follow the diy filter forum backwards and read about anything that has to do with sumps. Jcardona1 (previous poster) has built some very nice and simple sumps. Look at any of his threads. Chompers knows the diy pvc overflows in and out and has posted more info here than anyone else about them. Good luck, after you have spent a bunch of time reading and know the basics then start asking questions and we can help you.

The overall sump concept is simple. You have your main tank the fish are in and any other container (sump) that contains all your filters, heaters, and pump is in, depending on how fancy you want to get. Some guys actually grow plants in there too.
If the sump is below the tank then put a submersible pump in the sump and pump water up into the tank. The extra water overflows back to the sump. This drop is the area where you put your filters. A lot of guys use the filter socks here. After the mechanical stuff (poo) is filtered then the water goes through a bio filtration process typically bio balls, K1, and or pot scrubbies then the water moves to the pump area and back up to the tank.
Your situation is set up for a used Craig’s list 55. Super cheap and very effective. You’re going to have to do some homework to get the nitty gritty.

pretty simple
