Sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks about right, why not buy a used sump on here or CL that way we can see it first.

That's the plan, once I get a better idea of what I'm looking for.

You don't need to buy a pre-made sump if you don't want to drill the main aquarium; you can just use the 55 gallon as the sump for the 75 gallon. I would do something along the lines of what Cooterbrown described except that I would add a baffle & some foam/mesh around the return pump to help keep any debris & chaeto from getting sucked in.

Its my understanding that I can't drill the tank. And the original plan was to get a 29 tall at Petco and make a sump out of that but, again, because it can't be drilled, I was advised to go pre-made to avoid a tacky PVC mess. I have no clue what it would take or look like finished...

I'll keep poking around. Thanks for the help so far guys!

i was advising her to get a premade because she has no clue how to make one and she isnt mechanically inclined. not being mean just honest. i believe she wanted to keep the 55gal as a tank. cough... ("for my discus") at the moment i dont think her floor could hold a 55gal sump and a 75gal tank. it is kinda one or the other in a spot. all that rock and water on a mobile home floor might stand a damn high chance of making a new door to the crawl space.

you can come by and look at my sump set up and see how loud it is. it was running when you were here last. it isnt that loud if you run a breather tube down the drain till the noise is minimal.

He speaks truth...Not so much mechanically inclined...It can't be too difficult... *sump crashes, Scott has a new roommate* I didn't notice anything too obnoxiously loud last time I was there... My one filter, the Biosystem, is outrageous loud so it can't be any worse than that...

And I do want to keep the 55 for other fish *cough*notyourdiscus*cough* later on down the road. Though turning it into a sump isn't a bad idea either...then I could have my eels and my crabs! lol I'd for sure have to have the floor inspected first though...

with the 29 you would only have enough room to move one of your filters down there. and your skimmer would have to go on the side. the best option for a petco special would be a 40 breeder. i will have to measure the stand it is on to see if it would fit. i could always make you one taht would fit it. the ray tank is on the stand i built. you know how much that would run.

If its sumped, do I need the HOBs? I was gonna put them in storage with the 55 for later. I figured I'd have enough room for a skimmer, small refuge, and some mechanical filtration and a little LR since the majority of the LR is gonna be in the display anyway. Or do I have that wrong?

And I was planning building my own stand, mostly just to say that I did. lol But also to poly the whole thing over and make it waterproof! hahahahaha *genius*

get that sump. it is what your going for anyway. the problem is that the stand is 18" wide on the top. for the main display. the bottom is not as wide. now i wouldnt trust your building skills with my tank, but in the end you cant move here. your mom will be pissed and all your work will be smashed. best to go with a carpenters words of advise on this one. have me build it or buy one. thats the short of it.

I've got my dad, brothers, you, Mike, his dad and brother, and his friend Chuck (who is a legit carpenter) to help me out. And get cheap supplies. :naughty: I wasn't exactly planning on going to Menards and just whackin away with a hammer. lol

And why wouldn't the stand be as wide on the bottom as on the top? That's stoopit... Or do you mean the lip-thing makes it just wide enough for the tank and the rest is like a half inch shy? Whatever, I'm sure I'll figure it out. You can't keep me sheltered from the sawdust forever you know!! *points dramatically*

Question on the sump - Could I make one for less than 75? All I'd have to do is add baffles... Or is that pretty much at cost?

all depends on what you want to do and how much mistakes you make. your the inhibitor in the construction costs. my big stant was $150 cost.
