I run a sump on my tank. They can be as easy or as complicated as you choose. Theres a million and one ways of setting them up. I tinker about with mine all the time but one great bit of advice someone gave me on this forum some weeks ago now is to use the KISS method. Whenever i start tinkering and overcomplicating things i just remember this method, " Keep It Simple Stupid" and that way i don't get carried away. Mine's just gravity fed into a sponge section, then through my bio media and finally into my pump section where the water's pumped back into the tank. My heaters are in my pump section. Mines about as basic as it gets.
