Sunfish stocking rules of thumb?

Can anyone recomend some dither fish for this tank? I figure some sort of shiner, but not sue what. I figure a good deal of the would be lunch, but are there any that can survive for a decent period of time. I was think Golden Shiner, but they seem to grow a bit too big. I was looking for something I could keep in a small school.

Honestly, I wouldn't put a yellow perch in there. I've heard of perch siblings of the same size eating each other at around 3 inches. From my understanding they're a pretty nasty predator, not to mention their maximum size being: You'll have them for a little while then you'll need a pond or lake. Sunfish are great choices though, see if you can get some of the more stunning longear variations. My favourite is our OK strain that Inhabits the deep fork river system, allthough they're hard to find if youre not from here.

So yeah, sunfish are cool, but I wouldn't put a perch in there

As for dithers- Here greens and longears coexist with red shiners. The males get big vertically and the females stay small, though You'll need a larger amount of horizontal space for the longears to coexist with a school. In that same environment you'll also find black bullheads, they share the same space with the greens, who like deeper water, and school as well.

Big Sunfish like Greens, Pumpkinseeds, Bluegill, Warmouth and Redbreasts in a big community Aquarium (90g.+) I would use large shiners like the Golden Shiner and bottom dwellers like Snail,Flat or Spotted Bullheads (if you can find them) or big madtoms like the SLender or Stonecat; some other fish that I have heard of working are like the Lakechubsucker and Lake or Creek Chubs, and Fat Sleepers and Yellow Perch. Medium sized Sunnies in a medium sized community aquarium ( I believe a 55g on up) like the Longears , Spotted or Dollar sunnies I would use Common Shiners or Striped Shiners and big to medium sized Madtoms (SLender or Stonecat and Checkered, Ozark etc.) possibly with Log Perch, Redspot or Horney head chubs. Small Sunfish like the Bantam and Orangespots in a small community tank(30g and over) you could go with medium sized Madtoms and all kinds of hardy shiners like the Red Shiner, Small Chubs and Small Madtoms like the Tadpole Madtom and medium madtoms like the Checkered, Ozark etc; you could even use the same tankmates for the Blackbanded , Bluespotted or Banded Sunfish. I have heard of other fish being used like Studfish and Shad ....but you would need a very good lid and a long tank for these. PS For all of these fish you want them about the same size or only a little larger ( many fish love eating fish as much as we do), and for all you flamers these are COMMUNITY based aquarium sizes starting at minimum size, Im NOT giving species tank sizes or what I believe is cruel JDM tanks ideas. Thanks Joe.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I have settled on a stock list for the 75G

4 - MO Longear
1 - stonecat
a small school of 6-8 common shiners

I am also thinking of adding a Stinkpot turtle, but that is debatable.

With that many fish I would make sure you have really good filtration and some good hiding places (driftwood and rocks do wonders); but I like your choices (the Mo strain of Central Longear are the prettiest IMHO.

Wil do. I already have some great rocks and I am looking for a great piece of driftwood. Haven't got the filter yet, but I plan on an Eheim canister, so I should be OK.
