hey everyone, which sunfish stay the smallest and how many of them could i keep in a 60 gallon tank? i have good filtration from my wet/dry filter i built in my acrylics class and im making a driftwood ornament for the center piece of the tank right now and i have live plants in there as well. i just wanted stocking suggestions and i was thinking about putting a yellow or brown bullhead in there too but i need some ideas of what to get. most sunfish are readily available to me in local ponds, rivers, and lakes.

A 60 g is too small for Yellow or Brown Bullhead (they get 14-24 inches long) and would eat any small sunfish. I would get madtoms for a 60g. (you can buy them online) the pygmy sunfishes stay the smallest at 1-2 inches but I feel a 60g. would be too big for them to find their food; If you want small sunfishes I would go with either the Enneacanthus genus of sunfish which are 3-4 inches long and are spectacular looking, they are the Blackbanded sunfish and the Bluespotted sunfishes which can be kept together, or you could go with the Banded Sunfish which is alittle more aggressive and needs to be housed with small Lepomis species like the Orangespotted and Bantam sunfish which get 3 1/2- 5 inches long. These are the small sunfishes you can keep in a 60g. if you wanted a species only tank u could stock instead the more aggressive Western Dollars and Northern Longear sunfish which can get 4-6 inches long. Ps. all Illinois has O-spots but only the southern tip has Bantam sunfish, and Im not sure what kind of Longear you guys have, the Medium sized Central Longear or the Smaller Northern Longears.

alright well im gonna go out today and try and get some, hopefully i get lucky and it wont be to cold still to catch them. ive been catching northern and smallies last few days

Good luck, youll need 16 size hook or smaller to get O,spots, maggots or small pieces of worm will work if theyre biting.

I like the hardscape on the tank.

yeah i found a piece if drift wood at a pond and i cut it in half and soaked the halves fir a few days and then i screwed them to a piece if plexiglass and put the sand and rocks down to hold it in place for now
