The black "tab" on the gill plate is usually a good indicator it's a sunfish.
Make a "fishing themed" tank. Put a tire, a boot, a tin can, plants, gravel, and a bobber on the surface.

I thought the conclusion was Bluegill.
I concur:

Notice the similar coloration and vertical striping similar to that of a smallmouth bass. Green and other sunfish don't have this pattern.
The pattern in the pic I put up looks similar to your juvenile's.

That's actually probably a brim I've had several of them before they make decent pets. I wouldn't trust with any smaller fish once it gets bigger.
