so would 3 payara work with 1 hopalias, which hoplias should i get , which are more aggresive and which hoplias is legal in cali

Manganese...and make sure you have a solid, heavy tank top, they are jumpers!

Armatus is a payara. But first off payara arnt usually aggressive towards fish that are close to their own size payara need super clean water and a decent current flow. My payara has 8x over filtration @2700gph current flow. They definitely require extra care. Hydrolycus armatus and hydrolycus tatauaia would make better tankmates for a wolf fish but I have very little experience with Wolfs so I wouldn't know how they are. Hydrolycus scomb are definitely a more delicate species that are more prone to fungus and ick also the scombs rarely defend them selves against other more aggressive tankmates whitch means added stress more to fungus and ick etc.

it seems to me payara and hopalias are evil fish do u think i can house them together
Not a good idea, not a good idea at all, who ever gets hungry fisrt will eat the other, but considering hopalias are sturder, i bet he kills the amratus. Armatus looks wicked eating but to skiddish.

Armatus are anything but skiddish and like I already said payara won't attack fish that are close in size lol. You say that armatus look skiddish therefore you have no experience on that species. The odd tatauaia well on a rare note attack silvery fish depending on the individual.

Clarity, I said they are skiddish, not look skiddish, they look awesome and sinister, and if you don't think armatus can be skiddish fish, then maybe it's me that should be questioning your knowledge of the species, but that's not my place because I have never taken advice from you. Even at large sizes they can be very skiddish, and a fish that has any aggression towards them can really stress them out even at large sizes. Armatus are not really know for killing fish aggresion, though if you let them get hungry they will eat somthing that can fit in their mouth. Plus they are also known for nipping/jabbing other fish in the eye causing damage, but they are not all out aggressive predators to larger fish. I have also noticed fast swiming fish lilke a Dorado sometimes causes stress problems for Armatus.
Lastly how would you know if I had any experience with Armatus, though I don't claim to be an expert with any fish because they all seem to have diferent personalities, I tend to only post from my experience with keeping fish. Besides isn't this what the fourm is all about, a bunch of opinions from experience? Just for the record I have owned a few Armatus, the larges being right at 18 inches I called Debo, A beast of a fish my trophy fish, but to my suprise he let a 14 inch Indo Dat, stress him out, and once they get stressed out, its usually no turning back. I learned the hard way. So if that's not worth mentioning on here then maybe I am on the worng website. And for the record I currently have two armatus that I am rasing now that I bought at 2 inches a couple months ago that are about 7 inches now.:)

would the combo work if i was to feed the fish 3 times a day
