I don't see the dark area in your new pic, and now I believe my first impression was wrong. With the dorsal up, looks like a male.
ya this is why I was asking because sometimes I do see a dark spot but the fish changes colors constantly lol

Totally agree Duanes --- I was curious why you picked female at 1st, but then I read on about what you were saying about trailers on the dorsal/anal fins don't always mean male, but compared to my pair, my 1st impression was maleSTL_1478.JPG STM_1479.JPG STE_1457.JPG
the pair, then male, then female on bottom

Looking more like cyannogutattum though, don't they? Small spots for a carpintis, but neither are very aggressive at all

Still have scars on my arms from that guy when he was 5"

yea yours looks like a regular texas cichlid.. The pearling is small

So I thought smaller spots meant Pearls for "Pearl-scaled carpintis" and reticulations like yours meant cyannoguttatum? No I believe big spots were pearlscale.... Because they are big like pearls lol hence the name.. I have a Texas and an Escondido so it's clear the difference. Plus Escondidos are very colorful whereas Texas are darker. I'm pretty sure that's correct, if not I hope someone corrects me lol.

Unless I totally screwed up somewhere....

unless we both have carpintis but 2 different locales..........
