Mine was really red as a juvenile too.
I feed mainly Hikari food sticks, which hepl coloration a little, but here's what to expect after a couple of years

The pinkish spots in his fins and the stripes on his face are quite vivid in real life. I don't "tan" him or use the nano lights, either, though. Some of these pictures may be enhanced by nano lights, or hormone treated fish. I don't believe in either. NOT A SHOW FISH!!!

hes very beutiful but will probebly grow out of it
 
Yeah, i also notice that that they tend to lighten up as they get older. Hopefully it doesnt lighten to much though! Still has a lot of growing to do as he is only a foot. I'll keep taking pics as time goes by to show the color lightening and stuff. Its alright though, didnt pay extra for it. Was a gift from my friend for helping tranship his bettas. Now, gotta ask him for the platinum jar:)
