I lost my stunning super red sev today, for no apparent reason. He grew from 2" to around 7",looked stunning all the way, then just keeled over and died for no reason. All water parameters are fine, all other fish are fine, just dont understand.Tanks a 55 gall with an Albino Sen,Breeding pair of Thorichtys ellioti -(they didnt attack him),a 12" BGK,4" AT Dat and some big clown loaches (yes,i know an upgrade will be coming).Filtered by a 305 and 405 with UV,50% water changes weekly. Is there a genetic problem with in-breeding on these?

I haven't heard of any problems with them. You could ask Rapps. Maybe he would be able to tell you. Why are u using a UV on the tank? I'm wondering if that may have something to do with it but really not sure. Sorry for the untimely death of such a stunning fish.

Sorry for your Loss!! I dont think it was the UV....

UV won't kill a fish, I have UV lights on both my tanks helps kill parasites and keeps the water clear. On my one tank it has a UV steralizer in the tank and my 2 Oscars seem to hang out right next to it all the time and they has been no effects from that in the 4+ months I've had it in there running 24/7

My two super reds from Rapps were in my 150 with some wild-caught festivums and a couple wild-caught severums. One day at about 4" one of my reds started hanging near the top of the tank. She appeared bloated. I put her in a 20 gallon QT tank, added some Epsom salts to help pass a blockage (if there was one) and waited. The next morning she was dead. I still don't know what happened.

The other red is still alive and well in my 150. His growth has slowed a bit but he's probably 4 - 5" now and developed some nice trailing dorsal and anal fins. He's a pretty golden color with light red spotting. He's faded a bit since I got him. He's still my favorite fish in the tank.

I'd love to try a few more but I think I'll go for H. notatus instead.

sorry for the loss . . . it does seem like unexplained fish deaths are just part of the hobby sometimes . . . I had one myself two months ago; one fish went from acting funny to DOA in 24 hours . . . no idea what happened

maybe we should start a sticky on UFDs (unexplained fish deaths) and see if any patterns form

Im using a UV because i did have some south american puffers in the tank, which always got whitespot until settled.Having a BGK and clowns i didnt want to medicate

Yes go with the Notatus!! I have four and they are super NICE!!! also what I found out about severums being that I have a 150 full of them is that the reds are really Passive and gets bullied alot....

Is your tank glass or acrylic? I ask because even with perfect perams/water, I lost a green sev from my 135 for no reason at all and when I "checked into it" there were pieces of silicone that it had lodged inside the fish. :irked: Looked sick, went to the top of the tank and was gone in less than 24 hours.

My silicone was old and I didn't realize the sev had been ripping away at the stringy pieces of silicone as if it were a plant. Hope that might give you a possible idea or at least make a few people go check their silicone for loose pieces..... I lost that fish not but 6 days before my 225 acrylic was ready to move it over.

Sorry for your loss man.
