Here is the story. I got a good deal on it because the previous owner did not take great care of it. It has gill flare and only eats meal worms. Very nice color as far as I can tell and is immaculate. It just has this gill issue and I would like to get it on pellets asap.

I would like to know first of all how to clip the gills (as I understand you need to) and how to get it to eat pellets or something else that will make it easier to feed. Nice fish none the less and very red. I will post pics!

Thanks

there are videos on youtube that show arowana surgery's.

Good luck. it should not be too hard.

Rudy:
You are going to need some kind of sedative to do the operation. It's pretty hard to find transmore, the stuff they use in Singapore, as it is illegal here. But I used a product called Arowana Stabilizer from Ocean Free, you can find it on the internet. It is a mild sedative that does not completly knock out the fish but still allows you to do your stuff.

Good luck buddy.

sad poor fish...:(

Before you break out the knives, consider the following: I picked up a Sapphire XB from Calgary that was in very bad condition, he had gill flare, chipped scales, tail bite, PLJ, and was stunted only 10"s at 1.5years. I was planning the same as you but thought I try good foods and perfect water first. I guess what I'm saying is, be patient, if looked after well there is a very good chance he will get better on his own......

Here's a pic of when I first got him

And one year later at about 19-20 "s

So Gill flare can correct itself? That is good to know. My other biggest problem is the fact that this thing just eats mealworms. This cannot be good in the long run.

Apparently the previous owner tried to starve it and get it on pellets with no success. i have gotten it to take shrimp however it just chews on them for a while and spits it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Worms Ehh! I feed all my aro's fish fillets( catfish, tuna, trout, salmon, tilpila, pike, etc) and prawns. What I have done in the past is take the raw yellow fine tuna, and trout ( cheap at cosco ) and cut it into small strips to look like the worms. I would throw a worm in then the strip of meat, after a few times they will start to take it, this may take a week or two before they will always take it. Then once they eat dead food use your imagination. I'd say there is no chance of going from live food straight to pellets on an older fish........do fish fillet then you could try pellet afterwards if thats what you want to feed them. Don't expect immediate reasults.......and Good Luck.
