My Gar has not eaten in over a week. I can't get him live feeders and he won't eat grill. I just bought Superworms. Do Gar take those?

what is the size/species (of gar), what are the tankmates, what is the tank size, temperature, water parameters (ammonia and nitrite should be zero)? you can try other foods, but if a gar isn't taking feeders there is usually some sort of other environmental problem. sometimes it's just a matter of the gar settling in. superworms are fine, but they should be promptly removed if not eaten in an hour or so so that the dead worms don't pollute the water--

Hand-feed it at the surface with the superworms in order to make life easier on you & the gar so that you don't have to fish the worms back out if it doesn't eat them. You can use that experience to get it converted to other foods once it starts eating those from your hand; just be sure to stop hand-feeding once it gets big enough.

i've found that some gars eat them. Why can't you give live feeders?

If I remember correctly, Maine supposedly has a ban of some sort on the usual feeder species such as rosy reds and maybe even goldfish.

Yeah all feeders are banned it is so stupid It's a Florida Gar. Temp 78. In with a pike cichlid but the pike is very calm And 5 inches lonh

pike cichlid is a HUGE no no.... i kept a pair of vennys with my gar briefly... once they started maturing the pikes started harssing the gar almost overnight.

Ditch the cichlid; it's probably stressing the gar when you're not looking.

Is it a belly crawler? My pike was a biaaaatch and was soo aggresive to anything that moved!!! Id rehome him or give him his own tank!! PRLLY WHY THE GAR ISNT EATING!

I would be surprized if it isnt causeing the problem. ide seperate them in the least and give the gar a few days... should be eating.... btw... thanks for giving me yet another state to NEVER move too... half my fish would starve to death w/out live food. Ide also read the sticky? about converting gar to dead foods. maybe I got lucky but mine took floating pellets pretty readily. and my guys hate hikari, they prefer NLS. so Ide try a few small bags of different brands to find one he'll like. idk if you can but my guys also LOVE nightcrawlers... so if he is absolutely refusing foods he may go for them, cut them in half or thirds for easy eating. as far as superworms go.. I know alot of people who never had issues, but ive had problems with the exoskeletons causing impactions ( in fish as well as reptiles). Sure Sol knows better then i do how well gars digest/pass them, but imo not a good choice for a staple. something is better then nothing, but ide use them as a transition food.
