The LFS I have worked for on and off for 20 years is driving me crazy. The new trend is hormoned up Africans (40 in a tank, 1" inch long, in full male dress) hybrid peacock after peacock, and then horrible strains of oscars. I have told him time and time again to order some $3-7 fish from vendors here (unbeleivable selections available over standard industry wholesalers) and I am told people like me (us) would never buy such fish when he is done marking the fish up to 300% to cover costs. I disagree and said I would rather have him pay shipping, worry about DOA's. Then to be able to SEE the fish, i would pay the premium. He won't even entertain the thought. What do you guys think? I am talking FISH only....I won't pay retail for dry goods. He's been around 40 years, hit hard by big box stores and the internet, but I think having a great selection of fish would make the internet his ally, as many people are looking beyond oscars and pacus. Thoughts please.

Stop complaining, its his store anyway. He has the right to decide what type of fish he wants to sell and if he wants to play it safe, I won't blame him.

I suggest you find another LFS that has a greater variety of fishes. Personally I would take a 3 hour drive to get to a good LFS here.

Not complaining....and I wholeheartedly agree with you. I drive far as well. I just like these local guys and don't want to to them disappear and their store filled with an Acrylic Nail Manicure or check cashing store.

i have a lfs here that is like that the lady running it order in al kinds of dyed oscars and parrots, tattooed fish. i want to try and support a local store but it is hard the tanks are gross and the fish are diseased. any time i ask for something special she is hesitant because she doesn't think it will live in her tanks. i do buy some frozen food and other small things there

stores have to respond to the market. If the stuff you dont like is selling and making them money then you cant expect them to change. Perhaps if they do really well they will broaden their selection. If that stuff doesnt sell, maybe they will try your recommendation.

I like my LFS which is like 30min drive away from my house. Besides having a large variety to choose from, the owner would also take requests for exotic fishes as well. I got my ornate bichir thanks to her :)

my LFS is kinda like spirits, they have a few basics but the owner is really in to ordering exotics and rarer fish, he didn't really want to bother ordering a palmas polli cuz they're kinda bland but my retropinnis should be in thursday :P

NCStatefisher, where in NC are you? Im in hubert and Im looking for decent places. Ive found the fish cave and pet warehouse. everything else is poo.

If any of you are in the southeast, Exotic Underworlds / Kreatures and Koi (new name / old name) is pretty good. They are in Savannah, GA. Prices are great and the selection varies pretty well. They are good about taking in fish people cant care for anymore as well, I have found a few great "used" fish for cheap. Here's their website http://www.exoticunderworlds.com
