There are two small LFS near me and they both keep mainly schooling fish, Plecos, and common Cichlids. Their reason for their stock is that these types of fish are more dependable as sales. I understand this completely. I have to drive nearly an hour away to reach an LFS with a much wider selection. I try to support the local guys as much as I can but there are only certain things that they offer that I want; food and Ghost Shrimp mostly. My support of them is limited to the stock that they offer.
I'm in Raleigh, best place I go to is in Wake Forest, owner can be a bit of an ass but once you go a few times and he starts realizing you have potential to be a regular he becomes more helpful and willing to help you out. pretty good selection with a ton of variety

Yeah, Im stationed at Camp Lejeune. The guy here at "The Fish Cave" seems pretty cool. He had quite a variety, including the largest Raphael cat ive ever seen and lots of cichlids. He has zero advertising and has apparently been living off word of mouth for 18 years. The next time I head west I will have to check out wake forest.
If the store has been open for business for 20 years and he is the orginal owner who started the business 20 years ago, he does know what he is doing. If he did not, he would not have made any profit and the business would have been out of business.
Within a 50 mile radius from where I live, 5 to 6 LFS closed down within the past 4 years. That is how bad it is.
The idea of supporting your LFS is good as long as there is something valuable about it (costumer service , knowledge, fish quality ,etc.) ....no point in supporting a bad business. There are no decent LFS close to where I live, so online vendors or local hobbyists are the way to go in my case.
I'm surprised one of the local LFS is still open, used to be nice but then they changed owners and now it's got crazy high prices and it smells moldy and yea.... I don't think it's gonna last much longer.
The other one that I go to a lot is a tiny little store with only 3 small-ish aisles of fish tanks but the selection is good and they order any fish I want, it's how I got my tsn and how I'll be getting my marble cat.
If the guy doesn't want to take your advice it's probably because what he's doing has been working for him so far. Maybe if he gets more people asking in for exotic fish it will change but you never know.
