Supposed male festae, but...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So which one is dominant now? I've seen plenty of males look like the festae in question. Ive also seen plenty of females look like a dude;) lol if I was to guess the sex, I'd lean towards male until further notice. Try venting to be sure, cause at this point it could go either way.

Festae are really tricky, hey?
I wil try to get decent pics. But for the timebeing, those are the only ones I have

Jason,
The one pictured in this thread is the dominant one. The other one is an inch smaller.
The "funny" thing (lacking a better word) is that they´re in a 6´ aquarium and the submissive always stays nearby the dominant one. She could move to the opposite corner, but she´s always in a foot distance.

There´s still hope I have a couple?

Yes it does sound like you got a pair.

Hmm... It does sound like you might have a pair. But by the looks of the pic, it seems like there might be competition in the tank which is more dominant than the festae, assuming it is a male. What else is in the tank, and what are the parameters?

Some (hopefully) better pics of the same fish (looking more "maleish")

Jason, as regards your queries:

Other fish in the tank (eyeballing the sizes):
jag male 7"
freddy fermale 8"
v. synspillum male 10"
GT male 5-6"
flagtail 8"
panaque 6"

2 midas (2 and 4´)
and the "happy couple" (3 and 4")

Water parameters... I really haven´t measured in a while
Tank is 150g with a 40g sump, FX5, 2 sand filters, wet dry and UV
20% weekly water changes

Definitely better pics. I'm saying male for sure. Just give them time and being that they're in a community setting will help the pair form. As he becomes more confident he will show more dominant male color traits:)

Thanks Jason!
One final Q:
I am setting up a 700g later this month. The idea - in a few months - is to have this 150g only for the festae couple (or, to have it for them and a freddy couple, if possibile).
In order to help the pair to form I understant it is best to keep them in a community setting while they grow, is that correct? Being so, what dithers do you recommend? The young midas are - I know - a good option. Any others?
