Surface Agitation / Oxygenation question

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That`s a new one, too much shimmer.

I would try adjusting your return to a shimmer level you can live with and watch my fish.

If none are at the surface, gasping I would call that success and relax.

If the fish start showing signs of stress, well, back to headscratching.

So,I guess your background is glued to your tanks back, right?

I`m going to assume you tried moving the light fixture around and saw no difference you could live with.

Adding a sump could open a whole new can of worms, but is an option.

Me,I would try the easy first.

Moving the fixture back and forth, across the top.

Try different heights.

Play with return flow.

After all that failed, then I might step on to more drastic ideas.

Good luck

Yeah I tried everything you listed. The background is glued and its a great background thats definitely staying. I had taken the legs off the fixture so itd fit in my canopy better and it was resting right on the glass, but raising it reduced the shimmer a good amount. I still have a problem where the seam between the glass lid and the acrylic back lid casts a shadow, but its not too bad...much better than the ultra seizure shimmer.

Also, I have a tall tank and moved the return of one filter down to the substrate level as a kind of debris blower b/c stuff was just sitting there. The other return I got to temporarily blow in a spot at the surface along the back wall where it greatly reduces the shimmer but still has some decent surface agitation in one spot, and no gasping. I ordered one of those ball & socket return nozzles so I can permanently keep it turned how I want (not many choices with the default eheim returns).

For anyone looking to buy these fixtures, they are really awesome, you just have to mess with them and the filters a lot if you have a background to avoid the excessive shimmer, but it is possible.

Try using a hard cut out strip of plastic and wedge it at the surface between the back and front part of the tank glass, so that half of plastic strip is above water and other half submerged. Then u could let your spraybar/airstone bubbles rise at the one side without disturbing the surface at the other end. You could probably use a siliconed acryic or glass strip as well to make it less visible.
I used this to keep my floating plants grouped together at one side of the tank, when I still had gouramis.
Just my 2 cents

Wow this was excactly what I was looking for in LED's The attached vid shows major shimmer and color to boot. Different strokes for different folks I guess. What you see in the vid really is about half the shimmer you get in person. Glad to here you solved your issue.

Warning viewing this might cause a seizures. lol
