Surface Algae Everywhere!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just be extremely careful about moving the fish and breakdown/ set up. It's very easy to mess up and put your little friends into shock, or crash your bio. I assume you know that, but I would be remiss in not saying it. Good luck!

Consider having a uv sterilizer in your tank. It helps a lot in my experience. Your lights time is too much really. Reduce it. Consider adding some nerite snails or some algae eaters. What is your tank stocking? If you don't have huge fish then get some otto catfish. They are very good cleaners and since they are small they don't produce so much waste like a pleco.

I have 3 nerite and 3 clams, not sure the clams will do good bare bottom. Trying to keep them until I build may patio pond.
I currently have 22 Mozambique Tilapia. Most will be moved into large plastic totes tanks.
I reduced light time to under 3 hours. I wonder if an otto would do good. The tilapia get huge, but not sure they will bother them.

It is always scary, so I take precautions. All make it 12 hours and they look good.

UPDATE: New setup. Bare bottom with my DIY air driven bio canister filter. I added the cheap HOB Penguin 350.
The tank is crystal clear. The bottom is clean.
Amonia = 0.25
Nitrite = 0.00
Nitrate = 0.00
No Algae yet.
Light time under 4 hours.
So happy, thanks for the tips

Update "No Algae"

So far so good. My tank is clean and no sign of algae anywhere!
I started with a new clean tank setup. Cycled it by adding microbes and an established air driven canister bio filter.
I do not leave the light on all day anymore. I just turn on the light when I am in the living room from 6pm - 9pm.
Thanks for all the help.

Final Update:
The algae growth problem has now been resolved and is under control. (Reduced light time)
But, then I was having a problem with the water being very cloudy after going bare bottom.
Thanks to more help from a bunch of Monster Fish Keepers the cloudiness cause was found (Not enough BB) and that problem too was resolved.
I installed an under gravel filter with a power head and inoculated the tank with BB.
I now have three filter system on the tank--UG, HOB & Canister.
So far, so good considering the heavy fish load.
The Tilapia are being fed a LOT and growing FAST.
I am again happy and pleased with my 75g tank. Thanks for helping me learn a little more about Monster Fish Keeping.
:cheers:

After 45 years of UGFs I do not have a single one running now,
but I'm considering one in my refugium to run reverse-flow.

Are you running the UGF normal or reverse?
