Hello mfk I am very excited to tell you that my salvini have had their first spawn. Although I am excited I am shocked, everything I have read and researched said they will breed at appx. 3-4 in. My male is maybe 3in and my female 2-2.5in. I have noticed zero aggression toward each other. Will aggression get worse as they age? They are currently in a 40 breeder with 6 giant danios. How large of tank will they need when full grown?

Very cool, jealous, been wanting to get mine a mate in the future. IIRC full grown they will need at least a 75 or preferably larger. I wish I could provide my male with a bigger tank and I have a 90, he is nearing 6". They can reach about 8" if you feed them well. My male is a monster. Those danios may not be safe if they aren't fast enough and the salvinis realize they are a threat. I wouldn't add any additional cichlids that's for sure. Mean little dudes when they defend the fry!

Thanks for the reply I started with 8 and they paired off naturally. Also do you know how thick the males get? I read very thick for their smaller size.

I would have done the same but then when I bought the 90 it unexpectedly came with a bunch of convicts, and I ended up rescuing another huge male convict, so 2 breeding agressive mini monsters would have resulted in a bunch of scales flying hahahaha.

Not sure how thick the males are but I swear mine looks like one big jaw and seems like he has powerful muscles for swimming too. It amazes me how wide he can flare and open his mouth though. Fed him 1.5" roaches (apartment is infested) and several full sized guppies and no problems there. Nom.

I have had a couple of breeding pairs along the way. In both cases the males turned on the females. I would definitely have a divider ready to go and separate them if the male starts harassing the female. If I remember correctly it was after several spawns that the males got nasty towards the female. Since the fish are probably close to the same size hiding spots will probably not be enough to ensure her safety. I am not saying things will get violent, but it is very common with central american cichlids. She is a looker btw.

Wow that's awesome, do you have a picture of your male?

As this is their first spawn I have noticed zero aggression toward one another. They will live in a 75 once they reach a larger size. And I will definitely have a divider on hand if things go south. Also quick question is it possible to get a very strong bond between the pair and not experience the aggression towards the female?
