Survival rate on moving large Aros on long trips?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh yeah, if you use a styrofoam box, u can line the interior with a black trash bag, cleaned ofcourse... thatll help with any possible leaks or breakage to the enclosure. and black retains heat from light too... not much, but hey, it might help a lil... goodluck!

I dont have any experience transporting aros, but i did haul my cichlid on a 2 day journey with me... the drive was about 30 hours but I stopped at a hotel to stay the night, any ways, I just put him in a bucket and did water changes every third gas stop. I treated the water ofcourse and I ussually used water from jugs that were in the car. I would buy a new one and leave it in the car so that it becomes room temperature, so about 75 degrees.
I did not use any form of oxygen for the little guy, but he survived the trip with out a scratch!! Ofcourse, cichlids tend to be hardier than aros so you may not have the same results, but if you do take all the measures such as large enclosure, oxygen, water changes then you should be fine on a days drive imo

Wow 30 hr trip? That cichlid should host survivor man:P My longest trip with fish would be 2.5 hrs without airation and they survived but they didn't look too happy and lost alot of coloration during the trip.

Wow I will be doing the same. A 10-11 hr trip for me. I bought a 20 gallon rubbermaid tub, I got a power converter, air pump, and a poly filter ammonia remover pad. Also packed a heater just in case. My lfs told me as long as the temp in car is comfortable for us the fish should be fine. Just dont stop too long if you make a stop. I will be going thru this on Sunday so I can let you know how it goes. I will tell you this if my fish dies I quit the hobby! My trip is to purchase this fish and visit some friends.

He lost alot of color, its the fish in my avatar picture lol. But he made it back safely and hes housed in a 125 gallon tank nice and happily. He regained his color in about a day and was eating no problem too. Ive heard that you shouldnt feed your fish before transporting so that they dont pollute the water while in the enclosure, but i fed mine the night before and just changed the water so it worked out

Ya just do a water change half way will a lil bit of prime! air pump and your good!!! my Black Aro was fine man only thing is that the water in his cooler stunk by the time i got home so do a water change half way and dont worry when there big there tough!!!!

Also how can i keep the bio media alive from my filters? My friend suggested placing the media in the rubbermaids with the fish. Would that work?
Depending on what kind of filter you are running (wet/dry or canister) you should be able to just put all the media in a tub of water and just aerate it all the way home. Make sure that you aerate though, becuase a lack of oxygen will kill off your bacteria the same way it does to fish.
