Suspected Ammonia Spike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One doesn't mean the other...... Cycled tanks can lose their bio-capacity for a variety of reasons. The net result is the same. Just consider it a "mini-cycle!" ; )

im not sure what fish you keep but you sould check if the ph is to high or low depending what species you hold...i just adjusted my ph the other day because my species of fish called for it and thats just what they needed.

Allmost all fish will acclimate to the ph that you have in your tap. Some wild caught specimens may have some trouble adjusting but all others will be OK.

Alright guys good news i bought a new test kit. it's the API liquid test comes with 2 bottles of chemicals to test the water.

Anyways the card says 0ppm ammonia is Light yellow. but my reading seem to be Dark yellow. Is this normal? Tested in 3 times now. 8 drops from each bottle in the 5 ml tube.

Dark yellow ? Use sunlight or a halogen ... The nitrate test can be hard to read (for me atleast) How dark are we talking and are you holding the tube directly to the card just to the right of the colors ?

yaeh right on the card. well its not dark yellow like pee but not the same yellow on the card a little darker.

is that bad? or does that mean my ammonia is below 0ppm?

I believe if its a little darker that would mean that your ammonia is slightly above 0 .
This is only a possible "spike" if your PH is really high. What is your PH

hmmmm i tested for ammonia again it seems like its around and close to 0.

as for my ph it's high. the water is purple. a reading of 8.0+
