I have "what fish" a buyers guide to marine fish which I got for 7.50. It tells me the size of the fish, what it eats, where its from, how much to expect to pay, how to sex, what kind of aquarium, min tank size, how other fish react, what to watch out for, compatible or not with inverts and corals, where it swims in the tank, how many in the tank, how it behaves, and if it will breed in aquaria. A reallllly basic book that covers the fish only, but I like using it as a quick inexpensive general guide. Doesn't tell you anything about doing setups though.
I went to the library and rented some other books, and joined some reef forums, and one had it broken down into SW clubs in that area, so I allready know some people now by me in the hobby, who said they would be willing to help me if needed, even offering me some free stuff.

Conscientious marine is good. Other than that reading the stickies in the salt section of most fish forums will cover everything. And just browsing reefcentral will definitely increase your perspective.

Books are good too but you should still check out this site.
There are articles on everything you need to do and have to start a reef tank. http://www.nano-reef.com/articles/

Shoot, if all of my books weren't in boxes right now, I'd just give you a run down of what is on my shelf. There are a few that are better than others - but titles are not coming to me off the top of my head.

it is called "What fish? A buyer's guide to marine fish" and it is by Tristan Lougher, I got it at petsmart. Had a coupon, but other than that its 14.99 list price. Not 500 fish, but has like 150 give or take. Good enough for a quick basic reference, which is what I'm using it for.

As far as finding other saltwater people in your area, reefcentral.com is where I found them. I am also a member of nano-reef.com like Gene0514 above me mentioned. MFK is a great site, but I needed more specialized help.
