So I checked out Fish Etc's. new stock list and saw they have palmas available (sub species not listed) and since I don't have one in my collection, I messaged Cooper and said I'd be stopping by to pick one up.

He was cool enough to put a hold on it for me.

So I rolled up last night, anxiously waiting to see if they had polii, buettikoferi, etc.. but instead I found a tank with 2 lower jaw bichirs, labled as "Palmas Bichir" - $45

It was a great surprise, they're either Polypterus lapradei, or Polypterus congicus; so I picked one up anyways.

It looks just like marvinbakers congi posted in this thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49394

No bold pattern, just a green tint, with no pattern on the pectoral fins. I'll post pics as soon as I can.

This is my first lower-jaw bichir, because I used to not like them, but then again, I could never find them ;)

I hope it's congi because that's the true monster poly

Sorry dude, the other one was being held too

Here are the pics.... I'm starting to think it's a P. lapradei, what do you think?

I've counted 12 spines, a couple of which are damaged, but they'll grow back.

great pics! and yes you think right :) its P. bichir lapradei. when you said its got a green tint in your first post, thats what i suspect it is before i scrolled down and saw the pics :D

yeah it's a lapradei, still a monster even if it's not like my mighty congicus. nice pickup. I must get some new pics of my congi, he's slowing down a bit to about an an inch and a half a month but he just seems to be getting wider, he must be 2 and a half inches wide now! still very placid and timid compared to the others though,

Thanks for the confirmation on the ID, much appreciated. I'll let Cooper know what to change the lable to lol

marvinbaker, your congi is siiick, especially it's markings on the lower jaw... monster status!

Infblue can you help me with any tips you might have on quick ID's for lower jaw poly's? I can ID upper jaw polys easily, but I have trouble with the lower jaws because I've never seen them until I picked up this 'lil' girl.

She's in my planted tank for now so I can keep a close eye on what she's eating and so I can quarantine. She's as long as the 10g is front to back so she's around 10" - 12" TL

Coh... those fins are down right SEXY. Thats right I said it. SEXY FINS! Nice pick up man.

Nice lap. Cool species.

Thanks bro, it is a cool species... she's sort of pale though, so maybe she'll darken up more, maybe not, we'll see.
