Switching from Hikari to NLS... what would you recommend?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I won't jump into the war that will most likely come with this thread as it has with every other thread like this, but I think 2mm pellets are fine. If you want your fish to switch to another food, offer the alternative food exclusively and eventually the fish will eat it. That has been my experience anyway.

What size Hikari pellets were/are you feeding?

With NLS, I think it's best to buy the smallest size that the fish will consume. You don't want them grinding up the pellets cuz that will just cloud up your water...you want them to just swallow them whole. I would just buy a few small containers of several sizes and see how it works out. I think that for 3" 1MM would be best and for your 6" you might need to step up to 2MM, but try out both sizes and see how it goes.

I'm currently feeding Hikari Gold Mini. I think I could go up to the next size, which I believe is Small, but the Mini is working just fine.

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of maybe feeding both Hikari and NLS. I'm sure that one has things that the other does not, and vice versa as well. It can't hurt.

Wow bold statement. Some of us do care very much what we feed our fish which is why we take the time to research so we know what is going into our fish. Every pellet food does not use the same exact ingredients and ones that do might use it in different consistency. If two foods contain corn meal wouldn't you rather use the food that uses less of it than more? And by the way color isn't the only way to determine how healthy a fish is. I use NLS and I love the stuff and so do my fish. I feel good knowing that it is a high quality pellet food that provides everything they need. I also feed omega one in moderation. I would not just feed my fish anything and I would hope that a responsible fish keeper would read up on what they feed their fish.

To the OP 2mm seems fine. You don't want to feed pellets too big. The less chewing your fish has to do the less mess in the water.

This^^ Hikari uses more fillers than NLS or Omega one, plus they use MSG in some of their foods. While sometimes fish may not take to NLS right away, in time they learn to like and love it. As soon as my fish see my coming with food they go bananas. I would stick with 1-2mm pellets and go with NLS Thera A+. Anyone that cares about their fish should definitely research the food they feed... if you find stuff in there you wouldn't or don't eat, then why feed it to your fish? Compare labels, look at the ingredients and vitamin content of each food. Then decide on your own what you feel is best for your fish.

I might get my butt kicked for saying this but I am just giving my opinion...I do not like hikari. It has a bunch of fish meal in it. NLS has fish meal to. I use aqugon and omega One. You should buy Omega one or aqugon. NLS is more expensive and is not even as good.

I don't know what label you read for NLS, but on mine it doesn't say "fish meal" anywhere. I use NLS pellets, Omega One wafers and freeze dried treats and no one can deny how beautiful my fish are/were (some I no longer own).

One other thing people need to remember, the food only does so much to bring out their color... genetics play a big factor in it as well.

I would go with 1mm to 2mm for your fish. I find 1mm ok for fish up to 6" in length, then move them up to 2mm...then 3mm at about 10"

I think I'm using too big of pellets, I'm using 3mm for 4-5 inch fish and they hate it. They crush it up and spit it out. I will go down to 2 mm and see if they like it. Thank for the pellet size info, I have not had any luck yet switching my fish

some varities on NLS use fish meal.

I like aqugon too. Even thou they have weat for the second ingredient the first ingredient is whole fish. i use Omega one and aqugon. I might switch to 100% aqugon because it is not to pricy.

NLS Ingredients

Typical Ingredients: Whole Antarctic Krill Meal, Whole Herring Meal, Wheat Flour, Whole Squid Meal, Algae Meal, Soybean Isolate, Beta Carotene, Spirulina, Garlic, Vegetable and Fruit Extract (Spinach, Broccoli, Red Pepper, Zucchini, Tomato, Pea, Red and Green Cabbage, Apple, Apricot, Mango, Kiwi, Papaya, Peach, Pear), Vitamin A Acetate, D-Activated Animal-Sterol (D3), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine, DL Alphatocophero ( E ), Riboflavin Supplement, Folic Acid, Niacin, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, L-Ascorby-2-Polyphosphate (Stable C), Ethylenediamine dihydroiodide, Cobalt Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Choline Chloride.

These are the ingredients in their 2mm thera fish formula. they use meal.... it might be okay if they had whole fish for the first ingredient and a little bit of meal but they use a LOT of meal. There are very few NLS varieties that use WHOLE fish as their main ingredient.
