Switching from Hikari to NLS... what would you recommend?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hikari IMO would be the equivalent to feeding a dog Pedigree. Full of fillers like corn and wheat and all sorts of things that your dog has no use for but will prevent it from starving. But, the dog would be eating more food, crapping more often, have lower energy levels, and probably over the years develop a sort of problem that would be the death of it. I'd have to say by looking at someones dog i probably couldn't tell if it was fed poor quality food without closely watching. But, that doesnt make it the smart or responsible thing to do. At the end of the day we all choose what we feed our fish. For some its a bit hard to read something like a label and if they do they have a lot of trouble comprehending what it means or lack basic common sense. And trust me a lot of people do this with their fish, dogs, cats, and even themselves.

NLS is much more balanced and suited for a fish to consume. The fish should live up to its full potential nutrition wise. I've yet to see someone argue that the ingredients on Hikari are superior to NLS with any proof. Just blind ignorant biases.

+1 and you can supplement with raw shrimp, talapia. Thats my exact diet for my shoal of rbp and imo they are the strongest thickest brutes ive seen yet!!

But a big factor in a fish growing to its max potential is CLEAN water, always less the 20ppm nitrates and obviously 0ammonia/nitrites!

Nls pellet size i use is very small, 3mm, and most of my fish are 6"-12"+. Wich sounds kinda funny but works great for me. I have a fully stocked central am comm tank, with some oddball bottome feeders, these guys love to eat and are extremely competitive at feeding time. By using the smaller size pellets i can throw in same weight quantity of pellets wich ends up being a much larger quantity of individual pellets. This way the food sreads around and the strongest fish dont get to hog it up. Feeding time lasts longer as all the fish will wildly swim aroung while pellets are sinking and continue to root around in the gravel after they hit the bottom. Mutliple benefits more time for me to enjoy watching the increased activity of feeding time, food is more evenly spread amongst the fish, and food acctually hits the bottom for my bottom feeders. + I can use these pellets with almost all of my smaller fish in other tanks. I discovered this by accident, recieved the wrong size bulk order and thought my fish wouldnt even eat the small pellets. I was happily suprized with the results.

RD I feel you would be an expert on this: From reading the labels on various different nls it appears that most acctually are the same ingredients, is this true.?

All of the raw ingredients used in NLS are fairly identical, but the ingredient proportions vary in some of the formulas.

edited to add, muscle beat me to it. :)

well I just ordered 5 pounds of 2mm New Life Spectrum Thera-A Formula, will see how it goes, buying in bulk was the cheaper way to go and I have seen allot of good said of the food. AMAZON for great pricing. I like most know that fish will eat just about anything given the time, and I do feed shrip and other stuff also as a mix. I am just happy to get a container or food that does not disapear really fast and will be good food for the fish.
