Switching gars off live food

I am thinking about getting a 4-5" gar. The seller says he is feeding it rosies and goldfish. How hard is it to switch them off of live food?

I had no trouble with mine. He started eating krill right after I got him and from there it wasn't hard to move him to pellets. It might help if at first the pellets/krill drift in the filter current to appear to be living

Is it really a good thing to starve them for as long as that thread says? I have 2 unknown species coming in today. Will post pics later tonight

Here are my new little gar I got 2 of them and both came in looking great except a little smaller than stated but what do ya do? Let me know what ya'll think!

I little small to ID I assume. My next question is are they too small to convert off of feeders?
