Switching gars off live food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they look like spotted/florida gars to me. i might be wrong. pump em up and feed em nicely. how big are they? i'd suggest getting some more mass on them before trying to wean them off live.

Here are my new little gar :D I got 2 of them and both came in looking great except a little smaller than stated but what do ya do? :irked: Let me know what ya'll think! :)

I little small to ID I assume. My next question is are they too small to convert off of feeders?

At that small size fish, you can try frozen blood worms. Small pieces of shrimp meat. ... if there are small enough pellets go for it. Should be no prob. I converted a fully grown gars to floating pellets.

They are around 3". It think I will let 'em grow a couple inches and bulk up a bit before trying to convert them. I got them from TFD and he said he purchased them as aligator gar but didn't think they were and didn't know what they were so he made up a name for them... marble line gar.

There is a better pic here... http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fw&1220191412

Fricking amazing....
We have literally sent them Gar ID info and they still can't get a Florida / spot ID correct....And now they are making up more stupid and confusing common names.

If these are indeed the wacky fish from Asia they may actually be Platyrhincus X Oculatus there are some strong suggestions that they may be hybrids..

I don't really care what species they are and it wouldn't bother me if they are hybrid either. I just hope they are one of the smaller species...

About what size will I be able to tell exactly what species they are?

It is one of the three smaller species.. (or a hybrid) All of these fish that I have kept or seen have been Florida / spotted complex fish.. Not totally crazy to keep Shortnosed out there though. All Atractosteus species are out as well as Longnosed in the Lepisosteus genus.

ID will be much easier when the fish is around 5 to 6 inches and begins to show more adult traits.

Cool thanks. Will post more pics when they get that size.

i successfully got 4 3inch gars off live without much difficulty.
try fd shrimp.
they think its live fish floating around.
but once they eat it,theyll get used to it and continue eating it.
