Gonna get a fire eel and I want to be fully prepared for one. Except for the fact that I have gravel at the bottom of my tank! What type of sand would be the best cheapness to quality ratio? Also, how should I make the switch with fish already in the tank?

okay sand is awesome! and what i did was buy the play sand from lowes and cleaned it reallllllly good... i just put it in a bucket and kept the hose flowing in it. its only 3 dollars and its almost white. for your fish i would put all of em in a rubbermaid bin or something.

pool filter sand 50lbs for 10$

its also pure white looks way better than play sand imo

Sand is awesome but a pain to clean(totaly worth it though). I bought a baige color sand for 4 dollars a bag at the local aquarium store. i used about 10 of these for a 60g. Also when moving your fish to the rubbermaid bin make sure its clean but do not use soap.

Yea sand is really nice. just put your filters pretty low with a good circulation. the circulation should kick the poop up and keep the sand down. the filter will clean it when its kicked up :D. and yes def dont use any soaps to clean the rubbermaid. only use water, vinager or salt.

so how do i prepare the rubbermaid for them? its a 9" jar, 7" ornate, 8" Lima. how big too would help.

you dont have to remove the fish. just get a cup and scoop out as much gravel as you can. try removing the gravel over a period of a week because you can lose a lot of water and bb colonies. when ready for sand get a pvc pipe stick one end on the bottom of the tank and poor the sand through the other end slowly. :D hope that works. pool filter sand is a better choice than play sand.
