Swollen eye on algae eater, need help fast.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Separate quarantine and medicate if needed... eye just red? Maybe just some good water changes will be enough and keep an eye on them as much as you can
I'm gonna add him to quarantine, same with one of my rainbow fish, and keep a eye on them. Tomorrow I might add some polyguard or maybe now.

Check the water on my quarantine, everything is healthy. Put in some stress coat. Will do a water change on Saturday. If I need to add medicine I will, since I changed the light schedule, maybe my algae eater ran into driftwood from his right side from getting freaked out to the new light schedule, as that is where his eye is red and swollen+missing scales.

Had the same problem with my bichir. I used epsom salt to reduce the swelling (about 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons). To prevent an infection I used Seachem Kanaplex. To further speed up recovery, I used methylene blue to help transport more oxygen into his system. His eye is perfect 2 weeks later after 1 week of treatment.

Its always easier and less expensive to treat in a small Q tank, and may help keep infection from spreading to others.
The eye does look infected, so an antibiotic type med may be called for.
What are all the individual species in the tank?
Although aggression could very well be the angel, if you seen it attack, there might also be others.
How many fish, and what are their sizes?
How big is the tank?

3 Batasio fluviatilis catfish(2.25 inch), 1 vittata pleco(2 inch), 1 pictus catfish(6 inch), 1 regain dwarf pike(3 inch), 1 electric blue acara(5 inch), 1 jurupari earth eater(3.75-4.5 inch, yes I know he gets big, but at the moment he can be housed in my tank, I could move him if needed), 2 angelfish(pair), 2 Siamese algae eaters(2 inch), 1 zig zag eel(6 inch maybe), 2 new rainbows(2≥1), and 1 upside down catfish(if he’s still alive, haven’t seen him in a week, 7≤10 years old, around 3 inch).
45 gallon bow front.
In total: 16 fish.

Any one of those cichlids could have bit an eye out, but if they are a pair and thinking about spawning, the angels are a good bet.
But to be honest there are way too many fish for that size tank, especially as any more than as juvies, so its no surprise your having problems.
To me any fish over 4 " is already too large for that size tank.
