Swollen inflamed gill on a pleco. Please advise.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i got the hospital tank set up and used only water from the pleco / goldfish tank. its a 5 gallon with a small AC30 or 150 HOB. there is no carbon and only the mechanical media and some nitro chips in a bag. i aslo put in an air stone. the water was crystal clear just like the main tank yesterday when i put the pleco in. i also tossed in 3 small omega one algea wafers. my question is do you think the cloudy is from the wafers? the treatment says 5 days so i don't plan on keeping in here very long. should i be worried about the cloudy water? how do you like that 5 gallon stand i threw together?!?!?

I have that same ship. My BPs hide in it all the time.

Weird, fish get inflamed red and purple gills from ammonia poisoning. This thread is pretty old. did it die? if you did not find out what it was i think it probably would have. if it died sorry.

the pleco did not die. i keep checking the gill and it continues to grow. its actually kind of disgusting. i think its a tumor. the hospital tank setup did nothing but cost me 25 bucks. it was worth the effort to try and save a 7 year old fish but i am close to making the fish-cicle. i hate thinking it's suffering. my ammonia and nitrIte have always been 0 or very low. i did get lazy with the water changes and my nitrAtes got super high but that was in the goldfish tank. the nitrates have always been low in the tropical tank. this pleco has been in the tropical tank since shortly after this gill issue started. here is how it looks today.

Now that you finally realize it's a gill tumor, it can be treated with with Potassium Iodide. As far as euthanization, there are more human methods than the fishcicle.

please advise how to treat this with the potassium iodide. i did a few searches but nothing concrete on a step by step yet. same tank - med tank - dosing amount - frequency - etc ????? did it work for your rainbow?

if i can't get any success, what is more humane than the cicle? i thought that was the nicest way to go?

freezing is by far NOT the nicest way to go..its pretty horrible actually and not recommended as a humane way to put a fish down.

a sharp knife to the back of the head..witch with an armored cat i would not suggest.

Clove oil is the best rout..it puts the fish to sleep and it stops breathing, its what they use to put fish to sleep for surgeries

i think 3-2 drops per gallon should do it? ill have to look it up again.

you put them in the smallest amount of water they can be in and still covered with it ..than drop in 5-6 drops and wait for a few mins..the fish just stops moving and goes to sleep.

clove oil i found at soap making shops..co ops..health food stores ..places like that.

good luck with your fish I hope he pulls threw!

As mentioned the freezing of fish is supposedly very painful way to go and is highly discouraged. The clove oil method is good for putting the fish out. Then you can overdose the fish with Vodka once he is asleep. Painless.

No, I did not cure my Rainbow with the KI (potassium iodide) as it was a slow growing growth and I was not informed at the time. It can take a month or more or never to see results. If the fish is otherwise eating and healthy it's worth a try IMO.

i don't quite understand. does the clove oil actually kill the fish or just put it to sleep before i have to use the knife? it sounds like 2-3 drops per gallon for sleep and 5-6 drops for a permanent nap. i also didn't get the armored cat reference? maybe i'm just not up on popular literary works...
