Symptom of Disease?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am not sure. It may be a bacterial issue. However, it has been present for four months with no major issues.

If the ray is still eating, I would beef up the water changes, bump up the temp and maybe add some salt.

As long as it is eating, I would not stress.

I think we are generally too quick to medicate rays.

Agreed, and I am definitely not jumping into using Permoxyn. I think it may be time to just get rid of the rays, I am sick of losing sleep over them . I am gonna sit back, relax, focus on the pond build and the drip system. Is this condition progresses I will re-visit medicating in a QT tank this time.

It should be normal, its the same pattern as the back so it probably for some reason just showed up. I checked just now and my retic also has it, the pattern is all over the edge of the disk.

I agree. My retics had the same thing. Was your flower like that when you got her?

no, she was just 4" and perfect :)

Is it terminal? Any other insight as far as progression, etc.?

Sorry, the pics don't do it justice, it looks like the skin is sloughing off... sounds bad, but that is the only way I can describe it.

Maracyn I + II sounds risky, I cannot risk knocking out my entire filtration system. I think I will start to cycle a larger QT tank for her. I just have put it off because of the stress it will cause her being moved and crammed into a smaller tank, but it could be lessor of 2 evils. She is gonna be pissed in a 125!

i have dosed extremally heavy on rays with bad what evers.... it does not affect your bio filter....

Very good read, it explains why Permoxyn is not to be taken lightly:

Perhaps it is/was a high level of nitrates that brought this on with my ray? Over 80ppm at times.

there are members here who have higher nitrates than that and no problems...

noted about the nitrates, I am gonna work on them first seeing as this has been present for months.

I would equate permoxyn to using a disinfectant on the ray. No joke, I would rather net her and poor iodine or hydrogen peroxide over the wounds than risk that permoxyn stuff. It will only oxidize bacteria that is superficial. perhaps if I kept my rays in better conditions they will heal themselves. I think the pond is a good start. going from a 210 to a 1000 gal.

gonna come back to the kiss thread here.... go do 2x 50% water changes in a row.... then add salt... if you dont wanna do the meds fine... that crap mike mentioned i myself would be skeptical on trying and i usually dont care.... but seriously when in doubt flush your tank multiple larger water changes in a row...and salt them up...

Wow I'm at a loss here.I thank you nic for going out and giving what you can give. Mike I do appriciate all you have done for the hobby but in the past while i've been here you have helped till the end please keep it up and don't end it short. Good luck tank

do some serious water changes and salt the tank good.... after a few days repeat.... serious revert to kiss... pristine water and some salt... if after a few weeks no change to problem then i would move for hardcore maracyn and maracyn2 combo dose...like i said im hardcore and ill do some dumb crap but that crap mike mentioned aint for me...
