Synodontis id and compatibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think its a synodontis ansorgii....... I had one that grew to about 10 inches and it only has 1 spike on the top of the fin..... small spots..... grey base color and it was a mean as hell fish this thing killed 2 18 inch plecos and a 13 inch oscar....... but idk if ur will depends on fish maybe? not much is know about them at all in the wild.... its really the closest one other than syno E. U could try it and watch it close cuz if i remember correctly retics really dont like to be picked on and have stoped eating cuz getting picked on. yes this is a rare fish but mine was wild caught it came it with a big shipment of fish that i help unpack found this in the same bag as a 8 inch delhezi bichir that was dead and beat to hell.....

I wont take the chance i'll just take him out and switch him with my retic. Its probably a hybrid since i got 3 of them and they are all 6inch.

I'm sorry to say it looks like it may be one of the many hybrid synos coming out of Europe. The 'hump' at the base of the dorsal fin is a possible sign, and the markings don't seem to match any known species.
Definitely not S.eupterus.

Hybrid for me also.

Hey all.

The fish in question is mine. He was a juvenile when the picture was taken. He's now around 8 inches. My collegues and myself originally thought that he was a S, gallinae, however we all agree now that he is a eupterus/ocellifer hybrid.

I have a fish that is almost identical to your first pic, and I have been trying to identify it. I got it at a Mejier for five dollars. It was sold simply as a syodontis catfish. It is about 4 inches long and is the sole survivor of 4 catfish I have had in a tank with a rapidly growing juvenile Oscar that is about 6 inches long now.
