Do they actually have a feathery fin when they're big?

Yes they do get feathery fins. Some are very long and flowing while others may just be a few extensions. Mine is feathery extensions.

Agree with the above. Eupterus with badly and chronically damaged finnage. Google image Synodontis eupterus and you will see for yourself. Or visit Planet Catfish, ScotCat, etc. They have a gorgeous dorsal.

Right now he's about 7" and very aggressive.

I'm glad mine isn't too bad. From what I can see. He usually hides behind the driftwood all day. I have noticed that my smaller bichirs tail is kind of split now. Idk what the cause is though.
