I'm entertaining the idea of setting up another tank for a single wet pet. I've always been intrigued by Sysnpilum Cichlids, but don't have too many friends in the hobby who've kept them. In your opinion(s).......

1. Do they make good wet pets? (Interactive, confident, aggressive, and intelligent)

2. Can one be kept in a 90G, or would a 125G be a prerequisite?

3. Do you recommend them (only applicable to those who've kept them)?

Thanks guys!

I currently am housing one in my 220 community. It's about 4 inches and pretty shy. My amph hates it tho. Very pretty fish. I've heard there attitudes vary greatly but they tend to be shy when young.

No, syn lacks the personality to become a good wet pet. They are too shy and need to be kept with tankmates. I have one that is 14 inch, still skittish if I approach the tank too quickly.

Mine had tons of personality! And was a stunning fish at 9". A pair will give you the most interaction. And I would like to advise you that they can get to big for a 90. Keep that in mind. It won't happen overnight but it will happen eventually.

I've had mine for about 5 months and he is pushing 9". I don't forsee him being a very good wet pet but he is a great centerpiece in my 125g community with sevs, heckellii and a bellycrawler.

I've kept and bred Syns and they make great wet pets just like most cichlids, biggest I had got to 14 inches. I actually have one of the fry from my last breeding still in a comm.(sold everyone else) and presently it's an interesting 3-way tie for dominance in the tank between the 4 inch Syn, 4 inch Kamalau in my avatar and 5 inch Indo Dat. With all of them regularly putting a 4 inch Titanium FH, 9 inch Lyonsi, 9 inch BP, 4 inch ZZ FH, 2/ 6 inch Mammons, another 4 inch Kamalau and Red Spot Severums in their place. Also at 4 inches he's already colored up really nicely and growing fairly quickly, recognizes me and eats from my hand but then again they all do.

Interesting. Thanks for all of the great info and shared experience.

I have had a large male ( presently 13+") kept by himself for over a year and a half. He has lots of personality, is very interactive, and is just gorgeous. I think 'melanurus' (old name 'synspilus') would make a great specimen fish. A 90G would be just fine. Here's a so-so pic of him (last one). He's much more spectacular than this pic shows. Here's also a pic of some I have in a 180G and a 150G
