Synspilum Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why not just call them:

Paratheraps melanurus "Lago Peten", Paratheraps melanurus "Belize", Paratheraps melanurus "Lago Cenote Escondido, Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico", etc.?

True enough. I guess it will all just come down to scientists and hobbyists coming to a happy medium. Everyone has different preferences. I know that all I care is that I can correctly call a fish what it is with confidence.

Only the Peter lago strain shows the melanurus color pattern. All other locations and common aquarium strain show synspillum pattern with variable intensity, so there is not much to gain other than to specify the unique Peter lago strain.

Hobbyists and commercial interest want more subdivisions, but up to a point, there is hardly any gain with too much subdivision like the status of many blue Frontosa strains.

So what are you saying?

That we should only keep collection locations on some populations?

The "common aquarium strain" is likely a mix of multiple locations or variants (and probably other Paratheraps in many cases)...

I like this. It's very important to me w/ all sp. Part of the hobby I really like is just learning about the fish and their natural environment. It helps w/ their care too.

So sorry for the lack of updates, both fish are doing well, eating lots and growing already. Had a problem with the seal on the 90 and had to go get a new one before it started leaking. Their 55 wide doesn't do them justice, so I am going to wait until the 90 is set up before I post some pictures.

I'm more for really just knowing what my fish are, where they are from and what to expect. I do like a fairly detailed and specific method of identifying them, but as long as it is pretty exact, the method and name really doesn't matter to me. Just having to nearly identical fish with a synonym common to both used on each fish I was confused as to their exact identification.
