Synspylums

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had a breeding pair 4-5 inch size.after spawning the male killed the female.like you,my research has found that some are aggressive, but on a scale i would say they are in the middle.many people have them in cichlid communities and it seems to work.max size is pretty big,my fish are not maxed out.again i have read 14+ for males, females definitely smaller

Thanks for the response, I purchased both fish yesterday now I'm hoping I don't regret it, It looks like I have 1 male and 1 female, or maybe 1 alpha and 1 omega, either way 1 is displaying lots of color, the other has the colors but not as bright or vivid.

to get the best colors vary the diet, give them regular WC,keep stress low from tankmates.genes also play a part,as does the water quality.they grow slower when larger, what size tank do you have?

I have hand 3 paratheraps melanarus (formerly known as synspilum) over the years. My first one grew to about 4.5" before I sold it and it didn't color up much. So I got bored with it. My second one got killed by a Vieja Briedohri during transit from my house to a LFS for store credit. This second one was quite peaceful and colorful at only 3.5". My 3rd one is small 3" and changes color based on temperament rather quickly. He is a little punk and tries to pick on my flowerhorn who is 11" long. My flowerhorn could kill him, but he is too nice so the little bugger would pick on the flowerhorn's caudal fin when he's chilling out. Needless to say, I'm getting rid of this melanurus tomorrow. My flowerhorn is my favorite fish.

Holly crap. That is one nice Synspilus page. It was kinda like a treasure found. Thank you for sharing the link..

My Syn is 7" in a 140g community with 10 others bigger and smaller than he is. He''s territorial but not dangerous.

I couldn't get rid of my smaller melanurus due to the holiday, but I acquired an 6-7" female from Monsterpeacock. She is beautiful and gets along well with all my fish. That smaller melanurus is just a little pest. He reminds me of your annoying little brother. He tries to sneak behind my larger fish and pick on their tale. Most of the time the bigger guys just ignore the little guy like a flea. But sometimes he gets on their nerves and they chase him. I'm gonna find a home for him, but my new female is just amazing. She gets along well in my tank.
