Agree with the others regarding your syns compatibility, just wanted to add I also think it looks male, based on shape and what looks like blue eyes.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses, Sorry i took so long to reply, ive had a bit going on.

So most of your are saying the Syn is more likly to be male??? I always thought male myself but i shared pics on facebook groups a few times and everyone there always said female, No big deal just interesting... I do love the look of syns with a big lump on their forehead.

Any most of you guys are just saying keep the Syn alone? I hear what your saying it just i dont really wanna have a big tank with only one fish. In theory could aggression be lowered in a larger tank?

I was kinda thinking on the same lines as gourami by adding a couple of med to large fish at the same time in hopes of spreading out the aggression from the syn. My JD (male) also likes to be the boss so is alway pretty keen to fight the syn....untill he looses and get beat up (if the fighting has started when im not around) or untill i stop it. So also hard to know how he would react? That why i was learning towards the Oscars mentioned. Hoping the oscar wernt to aggressive and just used there size to dominate??? Man i dont know.......Dam american....I love them but they sure can be hard work

I would give it a try.

I don't think most people mean, alone (as in no other species) but most alpha cichlids don't tolerate other large similar shaped cichlids.
In nature melanuruum (aka synspillum) share their waters, and may even be surrounded by smaller fish like live bearers (mollies swordtails) or Astyanax tetras. They will also often tolerate smaller cichlids (especially those of a non-similar shape.
These species do not challenge the alpha's dominance.
Below a video I took in Mexico, the dominant species is Mayaheros uropthalmus, note the only other cichlids are JDs that stay completely out of the way, hiding under rocky outcrops, but are still quite ragged. But not the predominance of live bearers.
Also not the space is in the thousands of gallons, which is much more capable of handling multiple cichlids, whereas a 100+ gallon tank, which is mere puddle in comparison.
