A single florecent bulb only goes up to 2800 lumens, does this mean 3more florecent bulbs are needed for plants to grow?

Has anyone been successful with plants with only using 1 florescent T8 bulb?
yes

the only plant you could probably keep in a tank with one bulb is a java fern.

i have 4 t8 bulbs (48") on my 6 foot tank and im going to be replacing them with some metal halides bought at a hydroponics store soon, the t8's will grow certain plants but i want to broaden the species i can keep

im growing amazon swords and dwarf chain swords (echidnodorus tellenus) with these t8s and they seem to be fine

Those CFL bulbs are half as efficient, lumens/watt, as T5HO, and because the reflectors are also less efficient, you would be much better off using something else.

Really? I just bought some t8 shop lights for my 75 gallon since I thought they would be more effective making it 3x48 inch tubes. I am currently using phillips 32w/ 6500k/2800 lumen/t8. Thats 8400 lumen total.

But for the 20g long, im am using a clamp light with this CFL bulb (http://www.homedepot.com/Electrical...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053). It is facing directly above the amazons swords to concentrate the light.
