I'm thinking about trying to add perhaps a half dozen each of N.leleupi and N.calvus to a tank that already contains a half dozen each of P.polits and C.afra..Let me preface this by mentioning a couple of things, yes I am aware that I am planning on mixing mbuna with Tanganyikans and I am aware of the diet requirements of each.I feed my fish prepared foods exclusively so bloat for the mbuna will not be an issue. Also the fish in the tank now are all juveniles, an inch and a half to 2 and 1/2 inches in size. They are in a six foot sixty gallon tank with an abundance of rockwork.I am planning on aquiring the calvus and leleupi atleast an inch bigger than the mbuna. My thinking is the size difference may temper the difference in aggression levels of these fishes?I'm interested in hearing from people who have attempted something similar.Stories of successes and failures are welcome as well as any tips. Thanks in advance for any and all input.

A six foot 60gal?

I think its a risky one! Sounds like you tank might be a little understocked with Mbuna already and I think the newcomers are going to get picked on.

Remember that these fish fill the same nitch in the wild. This means they will compete for territory.

Technically they do not fill the same "niche" as they do in the wild as the tangs are predators while the mbuna are algae grazers. They are both rock dwellers however, maybe that's what you meant.Yes,they will compeat for territory but there is an over abundance of rocks and hiding places in the tank.

You are right it is understocked,my thinking is that if I add a dozen fish all at once it won't nearly be the blood-bath it would if I just added one or two. Also I'm planning on purchasing the tanganyikans a good size bigger than the current inhabitants.

your tank is overstocked already. what are the dimensions on a 6' 60 gallon?
The tank is not overstocked, you obviously know nothing about increasing the stocking rates of african cichlids in order to reduce aggression levels. I believe the tank was built home-made by some one,it has odd dimensions,it's been awhile since I measured it but if I remember correctly it's roughly 17Hx13 1/2Wx72L.
