so i was buying feeders the other day and the guy happened to scoop in a tadpole, he went to but it back but right before he did he asked me if i wanted a free tadpole, it was free for two reasons, i spend a lot of money there and they now me pretty well, and he claimed not to know what kind of frog it would be. So i said yes and took him home, just a few quick questions, what do they eat, and how fast will they grow and when will i see the limbs starting to form, i can already see the front legs starting to form.

The vast majority of tadpoles are algae eaters, plant scrapers, and detritus scarfers, they can often be fed on leftover flake food once it has settled. As the become froglets they become carnivores and feed on tiny inverts.

depends on the sp. most likely its a bullfrog tad, which can remain tadpoles for as long as a few years but usually morph out in a few months. once the limbs are fully formed and out you've got about a week~week and a half before it has to be in a paludarium or at least have a large land area. the tadpoles will eat veg. based foods like algae wafters and flakes, boiled cucumber, zuccini, and spinach. if it is a bullfrog then you're going to need a very large tank as an adult, at least a 75g but a 4'x2' footprint or larger would be most suitable.

I actually got a (bullfrog) tadpole in a similar way. He was a stow-away in a comet order and I took him home. I've had him for a couple of weeks in a 5 gallon tank and it wasn't that long before little legs came in. I'm still waiting on the arms though. I've been feeding algae wafers, shrimp pellets and bloodworms. Honestly, I've never seen him eat...but the food vanishes and he continues to truck around.

Mr. Splashypants (the tadpole) is particularly large. Bullfrog tadpoles tend to be fairly large and an olive/mottled color. I believe leopard frog tadpoles are much smaller.

mine is still small, under a inch, i actually took him out of my tank and poured some tank water into a large tupperware bowl, the blood parrots i got today were bitting at him. My mom was telling me that when she was younger she used to go get tadpoles from a creek and just put them in jars. she said she never fed them and they still lived and morphed into a frog.

s15, pics please.

As for the bullfrog tadpoles some of you have, they can take up to two years from egg to adult stages.

At that size it could be a wood frog, leopard frog, green frog, etc... If you can take a pic that might help us identify the species. Many tadpoles look similar in that stage but sometimes you can tell what they are by the shape of their mouths.

i will get a pic as soon as my mom gets home, she went out to a party last night. she has the i phone so i just use it, but i cant now. if it helps, when its mouth is open it almost looks like a blood parrot mouth, its a mix f a light brown body color and dark brown markings, its belly is almost white, and right below the mouth it looks hollow and almost see through. and its not very active.

It could just still be small. There eggs are pretty small.

Are you sure those aren't the back legs developing? Pics would be very helpful for this.
